Every licensed Hanoverian stallion was selected at age 2 for conformation, presence, masculinity, movement and free-jumping ability. At age 3 the young stallions are put into an intensive training program and then must compete in the Stallion Performance Test. They are evaluated on character, temperament, performance readiness, constitution, "rideability", jumping talent, walk, trot, gallop and cross country. Each stallion is given an overall score plus individual scores for dressage and jumping. The top stallions are purchased by the Hanoverian State Stud. These State Stallions are again evaluated at age 8. This time the criteria is the quality of their offspring - their ability to pass on their superior talents to the next generation. The entire selection process culminates in Classic Sires like Werther, Hanoverian Stallion of the Year 1992 and Argentan Hanoverian Stallion of the Year 1994. Currently, over 200 of the Hanoverian breed's most elite stallions stand at the Hanoverian State Stud in Celle Germany.
